Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has commended the organisers and fighters who showed up at the Global Warrior Champions Night of MMA at the Bukom Boxing Arena on May 3.
He said the sport is explosive and full of action. “I believe MMA has come to stay” he stressed.
Though the promoter, Jeff Taylor who is President of Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Association did not get the place fully packed in most events, the show was very exciting and full of fireworks as Africans from Ghana, Nigeria, Congo DR, Togo and Senegal demonstrated real bravery and spirit of warriors.
The grand papa of rap music in Ghana Reggie Rockstone, a popular rap musician who is 61 years old demonstrated raw technique and fighting wisdom against William Adom. He thrilled the crowd with his amazing power, skill, stamina and speed despite his age.
Ghana’s African Games boxing bronze medalist, Janet Acquah submitted to Kenya’s Felista Mugo in a flyweight (56 kg) championship.
Youssoupha Wade of Senegal defeated Adjitche ATA Gbami Paulin in the welterweight division of the MMA Event.
Charles Lamptey of Ghana lost to Cedreick Kalenga from Congo DR in the bantamweight division.
Nigerian Emmanuel Christian fought well but lost to Christopher Moly of DRC.
Experienced Jonathan Lamptey from Ghana did not show up with Victor Dooga from Nigeria in the lightweight division.
According to Mr. Jeff Taylor, MMA can take Ghana high in the show as a venue and host for sports business and entertainment. He thanked everyone who contributed to the success of the show.
He noted that MMA involves boxing, wrestling, kickboxing, judo, karate and all martial arts and combat sports so fighters and fans have something to gain.
